BMW 3 Series Chassis Codes Explained: E30 to E93

If youโ€™ve spent any time around BMW owners, youโ€™ve probably heard people refer to their car by a code instead of a model year โ€” โ€œI drive an E46,โ€ โ€œthatโ€™s an E92,โ€ and so on. These chassis codes are how the BMW community actually talks about generations, often more than the โ€œ3 Seriesโ€ name itself.

Iโ€™ve been making a decal for each of these codes, one at a time, and now that the whole lineup through this generation is done, I wanted to put together a simple guide tying them all together โ€” both for anyone trying to figure out which code their car actually is, and for anyone looking for the matching decal.

E30 (1982โ€“1994)

The second generation of the 3 Series, and the one that started the โ€œchassis codeโ€ naming convention as most enthusiasts know it today. This is also the generation the very first BMW M3 was built on.

E36 (1990โ€“2000)

The third generation, and the first 3 Series offered as a hatchback. I kept this designโ€™s lettering consistent with the E30 to make the two feel like part of the same set.

E46 (1997โ€“2006)

Widely considered a favorite among BMW enthusiasts โ€” itโ€™s mine too, and the E46 M3 is a car Iโ€™d genuinely like to own someday. This generation introduced dedicated quarter glass placements as a strong option for this kind of lettering.

E90 / E91 / E92 / E93 (2004โ€“2013)

The fifth generation split into four distinct body styles, each with its own chassis code:

  • E90 โ€“ 4-door sedan
  • E91 โ€“ Touring (wagon)
  • E92 โ€“ 2-door coupรฉ (including the E92 M3)
  • E93 โ€“ Convertible

One Design Language Across the Whole Series

Rather than designing each chassis code from scratch, I kept the lettering style consistent across all of them โ€” same proportions, same overall look, just the numbers changed. If youโ€™re deciding between a few codes, or you own more than one BMW across different generations, theyโ€™re designed to look like they belong together.

More Chassis Codes on the Way

This covers the 3 Series through this generation, but Iโ€™m continuing the series with other BMW chassis codes, along with a parallel series for Mercedes-Benz chassis codes (starting with the W201 and W202). If thereโ€™s a specific code youโ€™re hoping to see, keep an eye on new posts.
