BMW E36 Decal – Chassis Code Lettering for Rear Window
This is the second design in my BMW chassis code series, following the E30 decal I put together earlier. This time it’s the E36, the third-generation 3 Series built starting in 1991.
Built on the Same Design as the E30
Rather than starting from scratch, I kept this one consistent with the E30 lettering and simply swapped the “0” for a “6.” Same overall structure, same proportions — just updated for a different chassis. I like keeping this kind of visual consistency across the series so they read as a matching set if someone wants more than one.
Why the “E” Is Capitalized
When I was designing this one, I actually considered making the “E” lowercase, closer to how “e36” is sometimes styled. But BMW already has an official “E36” badge/emblem that uses a capital E, so I kept it capitalized here to stay consistent with that and avoid the design looking like a typo of the real badge.

Sizing
Like the other designs in this series, this one is a vector, so you can resize it to whatever you need. The “E” is drawn slightly larger than the “36,” similar to how I did the E30, but that ratio can be adjusted too if you’d rather have all the characters the same height.
Because it’s compact, it also works well as a small emblem overlay decal if you’d rather place it near an existing badge instead of on the glass.
Where to Put It
I’d suggest the rear windshield or the rear quarter glass — both spots work well for a design like this without interfering with the car’s factory trim.
Honest Note: I Haven’t Applied This One Either
I don’t know anyone locally who drives an E36, so I haven’t had the chance to actually put this one on a car yet. Same situation as the E30. That said, the E36 has a big following, so I wanted to get this one out for the people who do still own and drive them.
Color and Design Details
Every corner on this design is rounded, same as the rest of the series, which helps it hold up better over time without lifting at the edges.
For color, the sample photos show it in red, but if you’re planning to apply this to glass, I’d lean toward light gray, white, or red — all three read well against a rear window.
