Gas is one of the costs of owning a car that people notice every week and rarely measure. A car fuel calculator turns three simple facts into a budget: how far you drive, how much fuel your car uses and what a unit of fuel costs. This page explains how the numbers fit together and gives you a calculator that shows your fuel cost per year, per month and per day.
What You Need to Calculate Car Fuel Cost
To calculate car fuel cost, you only need three inputs:
- How far you drive. You can enter it per year, per month or per day.
- Your fuel economy. This is how far your car goes on a unit of fuel, shown as miles per gallon or kilometers per liter.
- The fuel price. The calculator works with dollars per gallon, dollars per liter or won per liter.
From these, the calculator works out how much fuel you use in a year and then what that fuel costs. The monthly and daily costs are that yearly total split into smaller pieces.
Try the Car Fuel Calculator
Use it as a gas calculator by car: type in your own carโs fuel economy rather than an average one, then choose your units and enter your distance and fuel price. The results update as you type. They are estimates for planning, not a promise of what you will spend.
- Distance unit and basis: miles or kilometers, and whether you are entering a yearly, monthly or daily distance.
- Distance value: how far you drive in that period.
- Fuel economy: MPG with US gallons, or km/L with liters.
- Fuel price: the price per gallon or per liter, in dollars or won.
โฝ Annual, Monthly & Daily Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate your fuel cost per year, per month and per day.
Example: 12,000 Miles at 25 MPG
The calculator opens with 12,000 miles a year, a fuel economy of 25 MPG and a fuel price of $3.50 per gallon. That price is the calculatorโs starting example, not a current market price, so replace it with the price you actually pay.
Here is what the car gas cost calculator shows with those starting values:
- You would use about 480 gallons in a year.
- The yearly fuel cost is $1,680.00.
- The monthly fuel cost is $140.00.
- The daily fuel cost is about $4.60.
That monthly figure is a handy answer when you want to know the average cost of car gas per month for a typical driver profile, but it only holds for the numbers you enter.

What Changes the Fuel Cost the Most
Here is the same trip distance and fuel price with different fuel economy values:
| Fuel economy | Gallons per year | Annual cost | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 MPG | 600 | $2,100.00 | $175.00 |
| 25 MPG | 480 | $1,680.00 | $140.00 |
| 30 MPG | 400 | $1,400.00 | $116.67 |
| 35 MPG | 343 | $1,200.00 | $100.00 |
| 40 MPG | 300 | $1,050.00 | $87.50 |
Going from 20 to 25 MPG saves $420 a year in this example, while going from 35 to 40 MPG saves only $150. Each extra mile per gallon is worth less than the one before it.
Now the same 25 MPG car with different fuel prices:
| Price per gallon | Annual cost | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| $3.00 | $1,440.00 | $120.00 |
| $3.50 | $1,680.00 | $140.00 |
| $4.00 | $1,920.00 | $160.00 |
| $4.50 | $2,160.00 | $180.00 |
And different yearly distances, with the fuel price back at $3.50:
| Miles per year | Annual cost | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| 8,000 | $1,120.00 | $93.33 |
| 12,000 | $1,680.00 | $140.00 |
| 15,000 | $2,100.00 | $175.00 |
Distance and fuel price move the cost in direct proportion: ten percent more driving or a ten percent higher price means ten percent more cost. Fuel economy works the other way around. A car that gets ten percent better mileage uses about nine percent less fuel.
Yearly, Monthly or Daily: Which Distance Basis to Use
The calculator accepts your driving in three ways:
- Annual distance is the easiest if you know your yearly mileage, for example from your service records.
- Monthly distance works well if you track your driving by month.
- Daily distance is useful for commuters, but the calculator assumes you drive every day of the year. Forty miles a day becomes 14,600 miles a year, which gives about $2,044 at 25 MPG and $3.50 per gallon. If you only drive on weekdays, enter an annual or monthly figure instead.
Using Kilometers, Liters and Won
You can switch the distance unit, the fuel economy unit and the currency on their own. When you change a unit, the calculator converts the number in that field so it keeps the same meaning. For example, switching the distance to kilometers turns 12,000 miles into 19,312 kilometers, and switching the fuel economy to km/L turns 25 MPG into 10.6 km/L. That works out to roughly 1,822 liters a year. Switching the currency to won is different: the calculator does not use an exchange rate, so it puts in its example price of 1,650 won per liter, which gives about 3,006,113 won a year for this example. Treat that price as a placeholder and enter your own. Switching between dollars per gallon and dollars per liter does convert the price.
Where to Find Your Real Fuel Economy
The number on a window sticker or in a brochure is a starting point. Your own driving can be different, so it is worth measuring:
- Use the trip meter. Reset it when you fill the tank, and note the miles driven and the gallons you add at the next fill.
- Check the dashboard display. Many cars show an average, but it can be off, so compare it with your own records now and then.
- Average over several tanks. One tank can mislead you because of traffic, weather or a long highway run.
Ways to Lower Your Gas Cost
These are general habits, and the savings vary from car to car:
- Keep your tires properly inflated. Low pressure makes the engine work harder.
- Remove extra weight and roof racks. Carrying things you do not need costs fuel.
- Drive smoothly. Hard acceleration and braking use more fuel.
- Stay on top of maintenance. A poorly maintained engine can use more fuel.
- Combine trips. Several short trips from a cold engine usually use more fuel than one planned trip.
If you change your tire size, our tire size calculator shows how it affects your speedometer reading.

A Note on What This Article Is Based On
To keep this honest: all the figures in the examples and tables come straight from the calculatorโs own logic and its starting values. The explanations of fuel economy and the tips for lowering fuel use are general knowledge, not a claim about any particular car. We have not used personal experience on this topic. The fuel prices in the examples are the calculatorโs starting values, not current market prices, and real fuel economy changes with traffic, road conditions and driving style.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I calculate my carโs fuel cost?
Work out how much fuel you use over a period by dividing your distance by your fuel economy, and then multiply by the price of fuel. The calculator on this page does that for you and shows the yearly, monthly and daily cost.
2. How much does gas cost per month for a car?
It depends on how far you drive, your fuel economy and the fuel price. In the calculatorโs example, 12,000 miles a year at 25 MPG and $3.50 per gallon comes to $140.00 a month.
3. What should I enter for fuel economy?
Use your real average if you know it, for example from your trip meter over several tanks. If not, use the figure from your ownerโs manual as a starting point.
4. Why does the calculator change my other fields when I switch units?
Each field converts only its own number, so it keeps the same meaning in the new unit. Switching the distance basis between yearly, monthly and daily also converts the distance. The one exception is a change of currency, which puts in an example price because the calculator does not use exchange rates. Always check the price field after switching and enter your own number.
5. Is the result exact?
No. It is an estimate based on fixed inputs. Actual fuel use changes with traffic, road conditions, weather and how you drive.
