V8 Vinyl Lettering Decal for Mustang – Free Vector Template

If you’re looking for a simple V8 vinyl decal with a strong automotive lettering style, this Restore V8 vector template is a design worth taking a look at.

I originally created this lettering for my own fifth-generation S197 Mustang. At the time, I wanted something simple that could be applied to the car without making the design feel too complicated or oversized.

The result was the Restore V8 lettering.

The design can be used as one complete piece, but there is also another useful option: “Restore” and “V8” can be separated and used independently.

Because the artwork is provided as a vector file, you can also resize it to whatever dimensions work best for your project.

The Story Behind the Restore V8 Design

This design has a little bit of personal history behind it.

I originally made the Restore V8 lettering for my own S197 Mustang. I wanted a lettering design that felt appropriate for the car but didn’t rely on a complicated graphic.

Sometimes a simple wordmark can work better than a large, complicated design.

That was the idea behind Restore V8.

I wanted the lettering to have a clean automotive feel while still giving the car a little bit of personality.

So rather than designing something specifically as a commercial product, I created it with an actual vehicle application in mind.

That’s also why some of the details of the original artwork are worth keeping when you prepare the file for cutting.

Restore and V8 Can Be Used Separately

The Restore V8 artwork does not have to be used as one complete design.

The vector artwork can be separated into two elements:

Restore

and

V8

This gives you some flexibility when deciding how to use the lettering.

For example, you could use the complete Restore V8 design as one piece, or use only the V8 lettering where you have a smaller amount of available space.

You can also adjust the spacing between the two elements to create your own layout.

This flexibility is one of the reasons I prefer providing the artwork as a vector rather than as a fixed-size image.

Resize the Vector to Fit Your Project

The original Restore V8 artwork was created at a relatively small size.

That doesn’t mean you have to use it at that size.

Since this is a vector design, you can scale the artwork to the dimensions you need for your project.

You can make it smaller for a subtle lettering accent or enlarge it when you want the design to have more visual presence.

The important thing is to check the proportions and the available space before cutting.

I recommend measuring the area where you plan to use the lettering first and then adjusting the vector accordingly.

A design that looks great on a computer screen may look completely different once it is placed on an actual vehicle, so doing a quick size test before cutting the final piece is always a good idea.

My Recommendation for Vehicle Applications

If you’re planning to turn this vector artwork into a vehicle decal, I strongly recommend using automotive wrapping vinyl or a good-quality automotive-grade vinyl film.

This is based on my own experience with vehicle decals.

Regular adhesive vinyl isn’t always the best choice for a vehicle. Depending on the material and how long it stays on the car, it may not hold up as well to outdoor conditions.

There is another issue that I think is just as important: removal.

When you eventually decide to remove a decal, lower-quality or unsuitable vinyl can leave adhesive residue behind. That can make the surface look dirty and can turn a simple decal removal into a much more annoying cleaning job.

For that reason, I prefer using vinyl specifically designed for automotive applications.

It is worth choosing the material carefully before you start cutting.

Keep the Rounded Corners

There is another detail in the original Restore V8 vector that I recommend paying attention to.

The corners of the lettering were intentionally designed with a rounded finish.

I didn’t make the corners extremely sharp or pointed.

This was a deliberate choice in the original artwork, and I recommend checking these areas carefully if you decide to modify the vector yourself.

When editing a vector file, it can be easy to accidentally make a corner sharper than it was in the original design.

If you change the lettering, make sure you check the corners before sending the file to your cutter.

I recommend keeping the original rounded treatment whenever possible.

It preserves the appearance of the lettering and keeps the design closer to the way it was originally created.

How to Prepare the Vector for Cutting

If you’re using the artwork to make a vinyl lettering project, a simple workflow is:

  1. Open the vector file in your preferred design or cutting software.
  2. Check the lettering and the rounded corners.
  3. Decide whether you want to use the complete design or separate Restore and V8.
  4. Set the desired dimensions.
  5. Check the final proportions before cutting.
  6. Select an appropriate automotive-grade vinyl.
  7. Make a small test cut if possible.
  8. Weed the unwanted vinyl.
  9. Apply transfer tape.
  10. Prepare the vehicle surface before installation.

Taking a little extra time to check the file and material before cutting can save a lot of frustration later.

Personal Experience, Not Just a Vector File

One of the reasons I wanted to share this design is because it wasn’t created as a random lettering exercise.

It was originally made for a real car that I owned.

That experience is also why I included some of the practical recommendations on this page.

The vector itself is only one part of making a good vehicle decal.

The material, final size, corner details, surface preparation, and installation all make a difference to the finished result.

If you’re going to use the Restore V8 lettering on a vehicle, take the time to test the size and choose the right vinyl before making the final cut.
